Very Broad and Generic Category Definitions:

* Non Fiction – when an author represents a piece of work as fact, not that it is truth but more that they believe it.
o Autobiography – a book written about the author’s own life
o Biography – an account of someone’s life
* Fiction – any tale that is not represented as fact, can be propoganda or just simply to entertain (types of fiction include, all of which can be mixed and matched)
o Romances – usually a story that focuses on relationships and love. also usually have “feel good” happy endings
o Westerns – stories devoted to the later 19th Century in the American Wild West
o Mysteries – stories where a character – hobby detective or professional – investigates a crime or puzzle and solves it by the end of the story
o Science fiction – can combine with other fiction dramas but focuses on science as a basis for the story. Often has future worlds, space, apolocalyptic events…
o Fantasy – can be combinded with other fiction types but involves magic or supernatural powers in some ways. Also usually involves a fictional land and world.
o Thrillers – fast-paced, action packed tales involving heroes trying to thwart a villian (usually from taking over the world)
o Horror – A story written to scare readers through horror and violence usually. Can be both supernatural or not.
o Historical fiction – A dramatization of a history event or person. The stories attempt to follow history as closely as possible, while giving the story life.
* Poetry – a literary art form that uses words in a beautiful way masking the meaning
